FAQs
I’ve Scratched My Timber Floor, Can You Repair That Area Only?
If you’ve scratched your timber floor, repairing a specific section of the floor can be challenging because matching the repaired area to the rest of the floor can be difficult. The newly treated area might look different in colour or finish compared to the surrounding flooring, which can draw attention to the repair rather than blend seamlessly.
In many cases, especially where aesthetics are a concern, it will be more effective to sand and refinish the entire floor. This ensures uniformity in appearance and finish, making the repair less noticeable.
Ultimately, the best approach depends on the severity of the scratch and the specific type of timber flooring. It’s advisable to consult with a flooring professional to assess the damage and recommend the most suitable repair method.
Parquet Can stains be removed from timber floors?
Yes, stains can often be removed from timber floors, but the method depends on the type of stain and the floor’s finish. For surface stains, such as those from food or drink spillages, you can use specialised timber flooring cleaning products. We offer these in our supplies shop – www.mclflooring.com
In cases where the stain has penetrated deeply into the wood or the floor’s finish has worn thin, sanding may be necessary. Sanding removes the stained layer of wood, and the area can then be refinished to match the rest of the floor. This approach is particularly effective for older floors or those with significant discoloration.
As a professional floor sanding company, we advise that for stubborn or deep stains, professional assessment and treatment are often the best course of action. DIY methods can sometimes cause further damage, especially if the floor has a specific finish or if the stain type is not correctly identified.
For deeper stains, more intensive methods might be required.
Can gaps between floor boards be filled?
Yes, gaps between floorboards can be filled, but with caution. The natural expansion and contraction of wood due to changes in humidity and temperature can cause fillers to crack or break away over time.
For minor or seasonally changing gaps, it’s often best to leave them as is to avoid complications. However, for larger, more permanent gaps, we use specialised flexible putty and fillers
How much timber is removed during the sanding process?
The amount of timber removed by our sanding process largely depends on the condition and type of your flooring. In cases where there is significant damage, such as deep scratches or grooves, a greater amount of wood may need to be sanded away to achieve a smooth, even surface. Generally, only about 1 mm of the wood is sanded off during the process for most floors.
This minimal removal means that high-quality timber floors can undergo sanding multiple times throughout their lifespan. This is beneficial for maintaining the longevity and appearance of your floor, ensuring that it can be restored effectively, even after wear and tear over time. Our sanding process is carefully calibrated to remove just enough wood to repair and rejuvenate your floors without compromising their strength and durability.
How much dust is created during floor sanding?
At MCL Flooring, we use a sophisticated dust containment system to minimise dust during floor sanding. This system, akin to a powerful vacuum with three strong motors, is directly connected to our sanding equipment. It efficiently captures dust particles, which are then collected into a sealed bag and filtered through a high-grade air filter before being recirculated.
This advanced approach ensures that almost all the dust generated is contained and removed. For homeowners, this means a substantially cleaner home during and after the sanding process, lessening the need for extensive post-project cleaning. The result is a more comfortable and healthier living environment, as well as a more efficient and cleaner workspace for our team.
However there will still be a very fine layer of dust which will need to be wiped away or cleaned up.
Can I have a timber floor anywhere??
A timber floor can be installed in all areas however we try to avoid installing timber floors in wet areas for obvious reasons.
Can I have a timber strip floor over concrete?
Yes you can lay timber over concrete. If the concrete slab is less than five years old, we can apply a membrane between the slab and the timber so as the moisture from the slab doesn’t damage the timber.
Do you move furniture or appliances?
Yes, we can help to move 1 or 2 items however if the entire house needs to be packed up it is advisable to call furniture removal experts.
Will my floors be shiny or MATT?
You have a choice of a high gloss, semi gloss or matt finish for your floor.
Types of Parquet Flooring
Teak Parquet Flooring
Teak flooring has many advantages. The first is that it is said to be rot-proof. You can use it in damp rooms without any problems.
Secondly, thanks to its high density which gives it a long life, this species can be laid in a living room or a bathroom, and will stand up very well to time and daily use.The brown and coloured colour will suit all your desires, both elegant and exotic.
Oak Parquet Flooring
Oak is a great species for parquet wood flooring. The versatile nature of Oak means it is perfect for all kinds of design scheme. A natural looking Oak parquet floor will mature from a pale tan-biscuit hue to a more honeyed look, aging naturally and with grace.
Because Oak takes pigments very well, it lends itself well to pre-sealed flooring. Our range of pre-sealed Oak parquet floors go from the fashionable warm grey coloured Coastal Grey oiled Oak parquet to the dark and dramatic finish of our Jacobean lacquered parquet. While an oiled finish penetrates into the wood to protect the timber and enhance the grain, a lacquered finish gives a subtle boost to the wood surface but still retains a natural look and feel.
Walnut Parquet Flooring
Walnut is a beautiful dark and intense brown hardwood with a high-end look. A Walnut parquet floor will add a luxurious appeal to any property. The rich dark brown hues of Walnut combine with subtle tonal variations, so that the striking geometric pattern of the parquet floor complements the colour and physical characteristics of the wood.
Chevron Parquet
Chevron parquet blocks are cut at an angle at both ends, in contrast to other parquet wood blocks, which have square ends. Because of this, a chevron parquet wood floor will have the classic zig zag pattern running along the floor. This is a highly popular pattern and can be found in many designs and styles, from fabrics and wallpapers to furniture and prints.
A more adventurous looking parquet floor uses a combination of Walnut and Oak in a fine line construction. The thin alternating strips of Walnut and Oak contrast each other in this dazzling and modern looking floor. With rich detail, pattern, and colour, our Walnut fine line parquet adds depth and interest to a room.
Aged Parquet
One of our most popular products is our Aged Oak Parquet woodblock. Each block is tumbled to create worn, soft edges, creating a convincingly antique or distressed look, as if the floor has developed naturally over the years. The wood is then sealed with a natural oil to produce a traditional looking floor with an authentic feel. The end result is a parquet floor which has the elegance and charm of an original antique floor but with the added benefits of modern, state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques.
The advances in modern manufacturing mean that unlike original solid wood parquet, our engineered Aged Parquet blocks can be used with under floor heating. With this floor, you get all the benefits of a modern floor but with the looks, character, and charm of a reclaimed floor.
Benefits of Parquet Flooring
Parquet wood flooring was first introduced in France in the late 17th century. Parquet wood blocks have fixed dimensions, so they can be laid in intricate geometric patterns. They remain a sign of quality and craftsmanship and have been growing in popularity for years.
Parquet wood flooring is a great way to introduce pattern in a subtle, stylish, and enduring way.
Our parquet is available in a number of species, including Oak and Walnut, and in either engineered or solid construction. Our range includes premier and natural grade as well as with a bandsawn effect or aged parquet. In addition to parquet woodblocks with traditional dimensions, we manufacture and sell large parquet blocks as well as chevron blocks and boards.
There are plenty of fitting options to consider. Standard parquet wood blocks can be laid in a number of traditional patterns such as the classic and universally adored herringbone pattern as well attractive basket weave and brick styles. With the variety of designs available, you can create the effect you want.
Parquet can be used in any room in the home. It makes a fantastic first impression in hallways, brings an elegant charm to living rooms, and looks stunning in bedrooms, suiting all styles of décor because of its universal style.
Don’t be put off if you have a small or narrow shaped room. The pattern of the blocks can play with perspective, helping to visually elongate or widen a room.
